Type I diabetes is common among children these days. We cannot take any prevention for those who are already suffering from this, but mothers of newly born baby can take a prevention to lower the risk in future by introducing solid food to her infant on time.
According to a study published by JAMA Pediatrics, a JAMA Network publication " Both the early and late exposure to solid foods for infants appears to be associated with the development of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM)" . This study shows a close relationship between the infant diet and later exposure to TYPE I Diabetes in children.
There is a rapid increase in Type I Diabetes among children younger than five years of age. The rate
of T1D incidence among children under age 14 is estimated to increase by three percent annually worldwide.
Both early and late exposure to solid food is bad. The right time to introduce solid food to your infant is between 4th to 6th month. Early (i.e. less than 4 months) and late ( greater than or equal to 6 months). Even early exposure to fruit in diet and late exposure to rice and oats are also associated to the increased risk of this type of diabetes. While breast feeding along with the introduction of the solid diet has appeared to lower the risk.
So introduce the solid food to the infants between 4 and 5 months of age and continue to breast feed the baby to minimize the risk of Type I Diabetes later in genetically susceptible children.
AWARENESS IS THE KEY TO PREVENTION
