First of all I want to thank you all for liking my posts. I am here again with the very interesting fact about potatoes. Believe it or not but POTATO IS NOT A VILLAIN BUT A HERO, if taken in moderate quantity. Excess of everything is bad and if anything is taken in moderation acts like a medicine, this suites the potatoes best. Here we will describe benefits of eating potatoes, how to eat it and some recommendations about it.

Why To Eat Potatoes?

 

As potatoes are rich in fibre, low in fat and the kind of carbohydrate in it keeps you fuller for longer (And this is the reason I think potato is the main hero while religious fasting in INDIA) which helps in weight loss. 

Potatoes are good for diabetics as it contains complex carbohydrates which take time to breakdown before being absorbed into the blood stream. So sugar reaches into the blood steadily, than at once which keeps sugar level stable.

Kokoamines molecules found in potatoes lowers blood pressure .

Potatoes help in preventing cancer also. RED AND NORKOTAH potatoes boost levels of phenolic content eg. flavonoids which protects against respiratory problems and certain cancers.

Potatoes also provide half the portion of recommended daily intake of Vitamin C.  These are also Good source of Vitamin B1,B3,B6.

It contains Potassium (which acts as electrolyte for nerve and muscle function) , PHOSPHOROUS (key element for energy production)  & MAGNESIUM.

How To Eat Potatoes


Method of preparation has significant impact on potatoes nutritious quality. Boiling transfers its vitamins and minerals in water, so baking of potatoes are recommended. But if you still want to boil the potatoes then use the water for soups etc to take its nutrients.  If we cool the boiled potatoes before eating some starch changes provides fibre (which keeps you fuller for longer) .

Eat potatoes with skin as it contains most of the vitamins and minerals. Layer just underneath the skin contains both fibre and antioxidants. So removing the skin will deprive you of many of its health benefits. Therefore leave the skin intact to avail its benefits.

Eat baked and boiled potatoes than its oily counterparts. A medium sized potato in a meal provides almost half of the recommended potassium intake in a day.

Some Recommendations

Don't eat sprouted and potatoes with green hues as it contains natural toxin called SALANINE (This is natural reaction on potatoes exposed to excessive light),but we can simply cut away the green part and eat remaining part of it

Don't keep potatoes in plastic bags.

Don’t peel potatoes. Eating skin boost fibre and potassium intake.

Leftover potatoes can be used in salads.

Keep potatoes in dry and dark place. 

Watch your portion size . Don’t overdo.
