Hi Healthies,
Research shows that most birth defects happen within the first three to six weeks
after conception, it's important that diabetes be controlled even before
you get pregnant. So if you have family history of diabetes, have high blood pressure, you are overweight then get your sugar level tested before getting pregnant.
Most women are diagnosed with gestational diabetes late in pregnancy (24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy). So get your sugar level tested during this period even if you are not at risk.
You can control glucose level in blood by adopting healthy lifestyle. Do moderate yoga (especially designed for pregnant women), include fruits and vegetables in your diet (after consulting doctor) to control the blood sugar level. You can ask your doctor for the right diet plan during pregnancy if results of your diabetes tests are positive. If your blood sugar levels remain elevated despite dietary and lifestyle
changes, you may need to give yourself insulin injections to keep your
blood sugar in check to protect your baby.
