Hi Healthies,

Most of us reuse mineral water bottles we purchase from market when thirsty.  Only few of us are aware of the fact that they are not meant to be reused and reusing them can be hazardous to our health.  We can take simple precautions in our day to day life to prevent our self from the exposure of harsh chemicals dangerous for our body.  We are going to discuss one such simple and easy way to find out which bottle is safe to use.

Water is the basic need of our life, but drinking it from unsafe bottle can be very dangerous for our health.  As we all are becoming health conscious day by day, it is important to know that which type of water bottle can have adverse effects on our body.   You can very easily check which bottle is safe to use, all that you need to know is what to look for.  There is a symbol (number in a triangle of arrows) on the bottom of the bottle (Resin Identification Code) that describes the material, recycling process and safety of the water bottle for general use.  By checking that number you can determine the safety of the bottle you are going to use.

Table below describes the number and related issues with the plastics (Open It In a New Tab and Enlarge).  It describes the NUMBER, USAGES AND SAFETY CONCERNS of the particular number.

HISTORY - The symbol code on the bottom of the water bottle—a single digit ranging from 1 to 7 and surrounded by a triangle of arrows—was designed by The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) in 1988 to allow consumers and recyclers to differentiate types of plastics while providing a uniform coding system for manufacturers.

To summarize, plastics #2, #4 and #5 are safe to use.  Plastic #1 has risk of growing bacteria.

PRECAUTIONS  -

1) Use plastic with extreme caution, especially for food or drink.

2) Microwave safe containers don't melt but they aren’t necessarily healthy.

3) Try to use glass containers for microwaving food.

4) Avoid plastics containing BPA (Bisphenol A ) and Polycarbonate.  Read "BPA Free" on the labels of the drinking bottle while purchasing.

5) Do not use bottles or containers that fade in color, appear to be wrapped in certain areas, or that lend a "plastic" taste to the water.

Non Plastic Alternatives - glass, aluminum, stainless steel bottle
